About Brembo

The Origins

Brembo was founded in 1961 in Paladina, near Bergamo, by Emilio Bombassei, his sons Sergio and Alberto Bombassei and his brother-in-law, Italo Breda.

The company started out as a small family-run mechanical workshop; but it was an unexpected opportunity that would change its story.

At the time brake discs were still uncommon, and the few in use were bought in UK.

In 1964 a truck transporting brake discs for Alfa Romeo from UK overturned, compromising delivery. Brembo was tasked with repairing the damaged discs, but the company realized it could also produce them and proposed the idea to Alfa Romeo, which accepted. This marked the beginning of Brembo’s incredible adventure.

Since then, the company quickly began producing Italy’s first brake discs for the aftermarket. The product portfolio soon expanded to include more braking system components, and Brembo began to gain global recognition for its expertise and quality.

The Challenges

The Seventies was a decade of exciting challenges for Brembo. The company entered new markets and developed its first brake caliper for motorbikes. In 1972, Brembo started supplying its first complete braking system to Moto Guzzi.

The turning point came in 1975, when Enzo Ferrari chose Brembo for his Formula 1 cars, marking the company’s debut on world racing circuits. An adventure that continues to this day, with Brembo competing in the world’s most challenging motorsport championships.

The Research

The drive for lighter, higher-performance materials was at the core of Brembo's focus on developing innovative products and processes. Continuous research and development led to the production of the first aluminum brake caliper for cars in 1980, a revolutionary solution in both design and materials.

Moreover, the strategy focused on expanding into two-wheel and four-wheel markets, covering both road and racing applications. This decade was also marked by the start up of production of braking systems for commercial vehicles.

Brembo focused on its future, leveraging the skills of its team and its advanced technology.

In 1995, Brembo’s listing on the Milan Stock Exchange marked the beginning of its global expansion.

These were years of key innovations, including the first monobloc caliper for cars and the first radial-mount caliper for motorbikes. For the first time, color was used on a brake caliper. What started as a functional need soon changed the perception of braking systems. From the very first colored caliper to over 150 color options, the brake becomes an element of style.

The Design

In 2004, Brembo received its first Compasso d’Oro award for the design of its carbon ceramic disc braking system. The most prestigious industrial design award in the world was motivated by the statement: “Were it not a brake, it would be a sculpture worthy of any modern art museum”.

In 2007, Kilometro Rosso opened just outside Bergamo. It became a renowned European innovation district, iconic for its red wall, and the new home of Brembo's headquarters.

Brembo expanded in China, India, UK, Brazil, and the USA. The group's activities also extended thanks to acquisitions, including motorcycle aluminum wheels with Marchesini and new braking solutions for the racing sector with AP Racing.

The Global Expansion

Brembo continued its global growth with the opening of new R&D centers and production sites in Poland, the Czech Republic, China, India, the USA, and Mexico.

In 2013, the company established the CSR Steering Committee to coordinate Brembo's commitment in every ESG area - environmental, social, and governance.

In 2019, Brembo expanded its motorsport presence by becoming the exclusive supplier of brakes for Formula E, while also making its debut in the MotoE championship.

The Inspiration

Brembo has embarked on a new strategic journey focused on continuous innovation and digital transformation. Guided by its vision "Turning Energy Into Inspiration", the company’s ambition is to help shape the future of mobility through cutting-edge, digital, and sustainable solutions. The Group also expanded its brand portfolio by acquiring SBS Friction, J.Juan, and Öhlins.

To stay ahead of the times and the market, the company presented SENSIFY, a state-of-the-art system integrating data management and AI to manufacture next-generation brake components.

The new corporate governance structure was also approved: Matteo Tiraboschi took on the role of Brembo’s Executive Chairman, with Daniele Schillaci as Chief Executive Officer.
