Muscle Car War is ON!
The muscle car war is back on with the new 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 VS the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT. This is going to be an epic battle.
Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is Back
Lets first talk about and look at the Mustang Shelby GT500.
The Shelby GT500 returns to us after being out for the last 5 years. It is back with a nice body look a race wing in the rear and over 700 HP of supercharged V8 engine. The GT500 comes back with more power than its rival the Chevrolet Camero ZL1.
So which modern muscle car is good enough to compete with the 2020 Shelby GT500? I think it’s the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, a car that FCA created to bridge the gap between the regular Hellcat and the drag-prepped Demon. Here’s how they compare. http://goturbo.net/mustang-vs-challenger
Most of the major design changes to the Mustang are in the front of the car. Having a massive grill and a bumper center vent make the look of the car pretty awesome.
While the profile remains similar to the regular Mustang, the GT500 stands out thanks to its sportier side skirts, new mirror caps, revised wheels, and the rear wing. Around back, the wing taken from the GT4 race car makes an even bigger impact and places the GT500 in a league of its own when compared to its rivals. The diffuser is very similar to the GT350’s save for the bigger exhaust pipes, but it’s aggressive nevertheless. http://goturbo.net/mustang-vs-challenger
Challenger Hellcat Redeye is a Nice Car Too
The Challenger Hellcat Redeye on the other hand looks quite bland in comparison to the Mustang. Even though it is based on the Hellcat, it is not that much more aggressive than a regular Challenger.
Ok you have to say that even though it has a bigger vent that runs thru the front bumper and has bigger outlets in the hood, it just does not do the job of giving you that WOW that the GT500 does.
The story is similar around back. While the Redeye comes with a fair share of unique features, it’s not overly aggressive. It sports a spoiler instead of an actual wing, while the diffuser is more like an extension of the bumper instead of a proper, race-inspired aero device. The exhaust pipes are a tad larger than the base Challenger, but they’re mounted just like on the cheap models. Far from impressive! http://goturbo.net/mustang-vs-challenger
These two cars are also very different when it comes to size. The Mustang has evolved into a nice coupe and was made a little smaller, the Challenger is like its big brother of the 70’s.
The Challenger is about 10″ longer than the GT500. They are close when it comes to width and the Challenger will win on the longer wheelbase. With the bigger size of the Challenger, that will give you a bit more room on the inside of the car.
Both Sporting a SuperCharged V8 Engine
The GT500 feels a bit more modern than the Challenger but both of them are sporting nice V8 supercharged engines.
These performance coupes share three important things. Both are powered by V-8 engines, both are supercharged, and both are extremely powerful. The Challenger Hellcat Redeye has the bigger engine, a 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 shared with the Hellcat. The GT500, on the other hand, comes with a newly developed, 5.2-liter V-8. Both have similar superchargers tho, a 2.7-liter in the Hellcat Redeye and a 2.65-liter unit in the GT500.
The Redeye’s Hemi generates a whopping 797 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque, a solid 80-horsepower and 151-pound-foot increase over the Hellcat. Ford has yet to release a final output figure, but said that the GT500 will arrive with more than 700 horsepower. Word has it the V-8 could crank out 755 horsepower and more than 600 pound-feet of twist, but we won’t know for sure until later this year. http://goturbo.net/mustang-vs-challenger
So with both cars having the supercharged V8 engines, they both are going to be quick with around the mid 3 second from the 0 to 60 mark, which is not bad. The Ford has not released the performance data as of yet, but it is going to be close.
So depending on what you like, the rival lives on in the true spirit of muscle cars.
